Without structured logs, you don't have infrastructure. You have a black box.
A 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 service went down in production.
No alerts. No warning. Just silence. 😶
I went straight to the logs. But they were plain text — loose messages with no context, no timestamp, no error level. Reconstructing what happened took me twice as long as necessary. 😅
That outage taught me the difference between 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘀 and 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘀. 🔥
A common log tells you something failed.
A structured log tells you 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 failed, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻, 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 and with what context. They're JSON — filterable, readable by machines and humans. 💻
Today I use 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗼 in NestJS:
→ Structured JSON from the first request
→ 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗽, 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 and 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 on every line
→ Low overhead — one of the fastest loggers in Node.js
→ Compatible with `𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘀` and any monitoring system 💪
Those who log well, diagnose fast.
Those who don't log, guess. And guessing in production is expensive. 🚀
